Through no fault of his own . . . It's a big number, 50, and in honor of Ian's getting there pretty much intact (give or take a few brain cells!), Marie-Hélène decided to throw him a party. Thank you very much chérie!! Here's a copy of the invitation. The vultures are circling! Charlie periodically asks when we will hold another party like that. It was one of the best days of his life, he says. Through no fault of his own . . . Ian is turning 50
PLEASE COME AND PARTY! CASUAL SATURDAY DECEMBER 7TH, 2002 7:30 PM
Children welcome but no supervision Parking and shuttle will be available across the road
Most of the guests were friends that we have made since settling in Santa Cruz, which often means parents of other children at Happy Valley School. Not forgetting their children, which is why Charlie had such a great time. The run of the house with only the half-baked supervision that a group of very relaxed parents could muster up.
Above are two very relaxed Happy Valley parents, Christian and Carl. Christian was kind enough to give Ian some Viagra promotional materials in a vain attempt to inspire the birthday boy to surmount his rapidly increasing age. Thanks buddy! It's the thought that counts! Below are three more relaxed parents, David, Nick and Susie. David is a Happy Valley dad whose son plays soccer with Charlie, and we met Susie and Nick through soccer. Happy Valley and soccer are the ways we generally meet people in Santa Cruz. Nick's son played with Alban for a couple of seasons in the Aptos Aftershocks. Again, members of this group are cradling their "apple juice," and having a conspicuously good time.
As were the children present! Here is David's son Alex with Charlie and the hosts.
Our photographer's instincts were a little lacking during much of this wonderful party (even if we do say so ourselves!). Let's say that we were otherwise occupied. But as things wound down after midnight into mellow chats and mellower entertainment, we woke up to our responsibilities, and took pictures of the musicians.
Finally, the old man and the host, before he opened his presents. If you can't tell from this page, and in particular from this photo, we had a great time, and are grateful to everyone who came for creating a fabulous atmosphere and evening together.
