The ones that keep going, come hell or high water, and there's been a fair bit of all that.

Let's start with Karim Medjad, Law Professor at HEC, Counselor to entrepreneurs and the World Bank, splashing around on a Brittany beach during August 2004 (Alex is in the background). There are more pictures of Karim and his family below. We met him in 1988 the now defunct law firm of Kevorkian & Partners in Paris. He went on to become a law professor and guide in the ins and outs of corporate law for developing countries or any other country that wants a legal system modeled on the common or civil law framework.

He also went on to be our best man (called a témoin in French, and after all it did happen in France) at our wedding in 1997.

On the left is David Milsom, CFO and an accountant in the UK, with his wife Janice during a short visit to San Francisco in early 2001. David and Ian were in the same class at Sir William Borlase's School, Marlow, went their separate ways but always enjoy getting back in touch. It has been a lot of years, over 40.

Then, below, is Fergus, who helped us out a fair bit in 2004 with tutoring of our forcefully adolescent adolescents.

Ferg lived at Lothlorien, the vegetarian student housing coop in Berkeley, during the year that Ian lived parked outside it in his converted bread van. He spent time in BC, Vancouver and Nelson, getting a Master's degree in economics at UBC and living with his family in Nelson, before returning to Santa Cruz to live.

Fergus is an economist and writer and notices things

Oded Eran, on the right, stopped by for the first time in February 1998, during a business trip to San Francisco, and went out on a Bay cruise with us. Ian and Oded worked together at the former's first job after law school with Kronish Lieb Weiner & Hellman, a firm in New York City.  He moved his family back to Israel when Ian moved back to Europe, and has prospered, helping grow and run one of the largest law firms in Israel.

Dave Sandles, on the left, brought his family down from Vancouver in October 1998, and a pleasure it was to see them all. We finally got round to returning the favor and going to visit them, for David's 50th birthday party in April 2003.  We all had a great time, with us seeing the sites and the two families playing a pick up soccer game. Dave went to the school in the next town to Marlow, and met Ian during their first joint trip to the US (it was a high school exchange trip) while still at school. He went on to become a physical therapist, emigrate to Canada, and build a successful practice in North Vancouver.

Ian, Charles, Charles and Kay Tillion, before the wedding in May 1997.  Kay was Grandma's best friend in Marlow, and came to the wedding as a kind of surrogate for Grandma.

In 2007, Ian attended his law school's 25th reunion, and found a bunch of old friends. Dave Lowenthal is on the left here.  He practiced law for long enough to decide that doing so was a mistake, and then went on to medical school and to become a psychiatrist looking after the deeply disturbed. Dieter Snell worked many years with New York's committed prosecutor, Eliot Spitzer, before the latter self-destructed.

On the left below are Kathy (regretfully a little covered) and Bob Gilbert.  The latter took on one of the law school's more authoritarian, if able, professors when he was gratuitously humiliating another student in class. Rich Bartlett went into investment banking and, as he was at school, is as happy as a clam.

Ian Summers and Ian went to school together for three years.  As a twelve year-old, Ian Summers liked music and physics, and with impressive life-long consistency he became a Professor of Physics specializing in sound at Exeter University.

Here he is with Stella early in 1994

Here are Nick and Tom with several of Stella's and Ian's "blended" children, again while out walking in the woods near Exeter in early 1994.

Next to Nick, this is Karim again, with Nathalie. The couple spent six months in Oakland in 1999 while he held a visiting professorship at Boalt Hall School of Law, U.C. Berkeley.  Despite his Harvard degree, Karim is a very nice guy!

Karim and Nathalie had a daughter, Célia, during 2003, and here she is!

Marie and Paul Roy, in Cambridge, New York during the fall of 2004. The Roys hosted Ian as a high school exchange student for three weeks of his senior year at Borlase's in Marlow. He fell in love with the US during those three weeks, and can trace emigrating to the US to the welcome he received in their home.

Jim Blakey, on top of his world (Boston, if you don't recognize it) in November 2004. Jim worked with Ian at the New York law firm where he met Oded Eran (above) and John Fore (here). Kronish Lieb hired the best people!! Jim made partner, but after a few years and a couple of kids, he and Joann decided that Manhattan was not for raising children and moved back to the Boston area, where he is General Counsel for a private company.  Ian and Jim worked together again on a real estate deal in Paris in 1997.

This page shows people from Ian's past with whom he has stayed in touch.  Not everybody, of course, because who is on the page depends on when the camera was available and how often we get together. One friend who with his family has his own page is Russ Hanlon. A couple of other Marlow friends are here. A few of the friends that Ian and Marie-Hélène have made since being together are visible here.
