Ian's Old Friends . . . The ones that keep going, come hell or high water, and there's been a fair bit of all that. Let's start with Karim Medjad, Law Professor at HEC, Counselor to entrepreneurs and the World Bank, splashing around on a Brittany beach during August 2004 (Alex is in the background). There are more pictures of Karim and his family below. We met him in 1988 the now defunct law firm of Kevorkian & Partners in Paris. He went on to become a law professor and guide in the ins and outs of corporate law for developing countries or any other country that wants a legal system modeled on the common or civil law framework.
He also went on to be our best man (called a témoin in French, and after all it did happen in France) at our wedding in 1997. On the left is David Milsom, CFO and an accountant in the UK, with his wife Janice during a short visit to San Francisco in early 2001. David and Ian were in the same class at Sir William Borlase's School, Marlow, went their separate ways but always enjoy getting back in touch. It has been a lot of years, over 40. Then, below, is Fergus, who helped us out a fair bit in 2004 with tutoring of our forcefully adolescent adolescents. Ferg lived at Lothlorien, the vegetarian student housing coop in Berkeley, during the year that Ian lived parked outside it in his converted bread van. He spent time in BC, Vancouver and Nelson, getting a Master's degree in economics at UBC and living with his family in Nelson, before returning to Santa Cruz to live. Fergus is an economist and writer and notices things!
Oded Eran, on the right, stopped by for the first time in February 1998, during a business trip to San Francisco, and went out on a Bay cruise with us. Ian and Oded worked together at the former's first job after law school with Kronish Lieb Weiner & Hellman, a firm in New York City. He moved his family back to Israel when Ian moved back to Europe, and has prospered, helping grow and run one of the largest law firms in Israel.
Dave Sandles, on the left, brought his family down from Vancouver in October 1998, and a pleasure it was to see them all. We finally got round to returning the favor and going to visit them, for David's 50th birthday party in April 2003. We all had a great time, with us seeing the sites and the two families playing a pick up soccer game. Dave went to the school in the next town to Marlow, and met Ian during their first joint trip to the US (it was a high school exchange trip) while still at school. He went on to become a physical therapist, emigrate to Canada, and build a successful practice in North Vancouver.
This page shows people from Ian's past with whom he has stayed in touch. Not everybody, of course, because who is on the page depends on when the camera was available and how often we get together. One friend who with his family has his own page is Russ Hanlon. A couple of other Marlow friends are here. A few of the friends that Ian and Marie-Hélène have made since being together are visible here. |
