New York City The first step on our emigration from France to Santa Cruz in June 1997 was a flight to New York, where a limo picked us up at JFK and took us into Manhattan. The Hotel was in midtown, about three blocks south of Central Park on Seventh Avenue. It was Marie-Hélène's first time in the granite corridors of Manhattan's skyscrapers, and she loved it. Jet-lagged, she walked from the Hotel at 57th Street to Macy's on 34th Street in the heat of summer with Daphné, Alban and Charles in tow, and had only good things to say about it! On top of the world (as in World Trade Center!). The vertical finger in the haze of the sea behind is the Statute of Liberty. "Live free or die". We believe. We wrote the foregoing during the summer of 2000.
September 11, 2001. Our hearts go out to the families of all those hurt or killed when hidden cowards attacked this part of Manhattan and destroyed it before scurrying back into their holes. We love New York.
The photo on the right was by Ed Bailey and made available by AP over Yahoo. Thanks!
There are not a lot of pictures of these few days in New York, in part because we were in shock. A French judge did not let Nick and Tom come with us. See "Our Arrival in Santa Cruz". New York is a fabulous city, but we did miss Nick and Tom. . . .
On to Santa Cruz . . ., but WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE NEW YORK!!!! |
